Relay for Life -
Event Info: Relay For Life is a national
fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. In 1985 a surgeon in
Tacoma, Washington wanted to raise money for the American Cancer
Society. He made his way around a track at a local college for 24 hours,
more than 83 miles and raised over $27,000 for the fight against cancer.
The following year 19 teams joined together to form the first team event
to fight cancer. Currently, Relay For Life is held in more than 20
countries around the world with more than three million participants in
the United States alone.
Decatur County became involved with Relay For Life in 1995. We began at
the Decatur County civic center area and raised $9,000. During the past
10 years we have grown in size with a total of 16 teams and 14 corporate
sponsors. We have moved to the Decatur County Fairgrounds with our
entertainment activities taking place in the convention center. In 2005,
we raised over $43,000. From the beginning of Decatur County’s Relay For
Life events we have raised approx. $256,959 for the fight against
cancer.

Ayers Foundation Scholarship Banquet
- This event will be located
at the Decatur County Convention Center - As a businessman who enjoyed
much success, Jim Ayers has at various times in his career been in the
nursing home business, the car business, the banking business, the real
estate business, and sometimes all of the above. In addition, Jim is in
the business of making dreams come true. Jim Ayers credits much to his
early expectation that he would attend college and create more
opportunities for himself by furthering his education. Now, with The
Ayers Foundation Scholars Program, he is providing both encouragement
and resources for students from Decatur County, Tennessee to set those
same early educational expectations themselves. By providing college
counselors and renewable last-dollar scholarships, available to all
Decatur County, Tennessee graduates beginning with the 132 members of
the Class of 2000, Mr. Ayers hopes not only to affect the lives of

Decatur County Fair
- The Decatur County Fair is a week long
annual event held in September beginning on Labor Day. Decatur County
Fair is one considered one of the best small fairs in the
state—receiving the ‘Most Improved Fair’ award in 1999. The event is
coordinated by the Fair Board and conducted by local volunteers. The
Educational Exhibits –including crops, canning, handicrafts and
needlework are a major part of the event and give an opportunity for
youth and adult residents of the county to display their handiwork and
win premiums and ribbons. The fair also gives youth an opportunity to
compete in livestock events, horse shows, pet shows and other individual
contests conducted by the fair. A highlight of the fair is The ‘Fairest
of the Fair’ contest and the other pageants that are held for each age
group from babies through young adults. Local business partners support
the fair with their commercial exhibits and sponsorship of events and
shows. Volunteers spend many days entering, displaying and assisting
with judging of exhibits and also serving as hostesses of the exhibit
building. There is something for everyone at the fair—including the
carnival–which adds its own excitement to the event.
